Filmnews was a monthly newspaper dealing with independent film production, distribution and exhibition in Australia and the federal and state government policies and practices which supported them. It was produced in Sydney but distributed Australia-wide, containing news, reviews, interviews, articles and some gossip on the local film community. It ran from the easrly 1970s to mid 1994.

History

Filmnews was born from the irregular roneoed newsletter of a group of filmmakers struggling to distribute their films at a time when film was still a very marginalised activity; it developed through the life of the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op from a paper mainly concerned with screening information and members' news to a journal that took a vital interest in and a strong position on all the issues that concerned the filmmaker/worker community around the Co-op; and after the demise of the Co-op it further broadened its base to encompass the wide range of cultural and industrial concerns that affect the film, media and communications sector.

Over the nearly twenty years of its existence Filmnews followed the many issues that have contributed to the development of film and media policy, theory, and practice, surveyed the development of individual filmmakers and videographers, of filmmaking practice in all its formats, and of the film community itself. In fact, it charted the change from a struggling, marginalised group of determined individuals to a strong and healthy industry. As the various film and video organisations around Australia came into being, they provided operational bases for a film and video community of plurality, diversity and innovation, and Filmnews documented their histories, recorded their activities and shared their commitment to screen culture. Filmnews gradually developed into a journal that provided an independent, critical perspective on all those issues that affected the production, distribution and exhibition of film and video in Australia, and aimed to supply both information and analysis to a readership that ranged from film practitioners to those working in screen education and film studies, to both teachers and students. And Filmnews was vigilant in continually questioning the practices of the industry, of government in relation to film and funding policies, of the funding bodies, and of screen education and training providers.

Content

The content of Filmnews ranged from major articles and extensive interviews to great photos and other illustrations, and was enlivened by cartoons, poems and other short pieces, and even comic strips, while the news and gossip page, ''Who’s Doing What'', was essential reading. Our reviews, of films, related books, the occasional TV program, ranged from short and snappy to very extensive, and the obituaries of important local and overseas film people became a feature. FilmNews’ coverage of specific subjects or themes - such as government assistance, women's filmmaking, public and community broadcasting, censorship, copyright, new technologies, the various institutions within the film landscape (Film Australia, the AFI, SBS, AFTRS, the state funding bodies, and of course the AFC itself) and changes in documentary practice – featured solid reporting and informed commentary. And although there were some spirited and very lively stoushes over coverage of some of these issues, they never caused real damage. It was probably both the range and diversity of its content and the unusual juxtapositions of issues, events and people that made filmnews so unique, and made its readers so attached to it. And it was a matter of absolute conviction to all involved with producing Filmnews that production, distribution, exhibition and the audience are inseparable, and all are part of an overarching screen culture.

A readership survey in 1986 discovered that the typical reader was involved in film or video production, was male and in his twenties, was relatively poor, and loved the writing of Adrian Martin. He went to the movies at least once a week, bought several other film journals, regularly attended conferences, and spent up to $10,000 a year on film or video production services. Readers loved Filmnews, the only changes they wanted was more of what they were already getting – although one respondent did argue for `more criticism of local independent film and video, but better argued and less righteous.’ And another argued for more obituaries.

For ten years Filmnews was part of the C-op – often, and for most people, the most visible part. Filmnews was involved in all the fights, the campaigns, the lobbying, the victories and the conflicts that were so much part of Co-op life. Filmnews explained and analysed Co-op changes in policy, argued for more attention and funding to be given to the production of independent film and video, and to independent distribution and exhibition. Women’s films and women filmmakers became a strong and important element in Filmnews, including campaigns for training and workshops for women; the theory and the practice, the setting up of and the progress of the Women’s Film Fund and the Women’s film units became a continuing theme. Indigenous film making, films on black Australia, and the need for an Indigenous film unit was another strong campaign.

Then, almost overnight, the Co-op was gone. The cinema had closed down in 1981, when the AFC decided not to fund it any longer; but the AFC supported the Co-op’s move to new premises in Pyrmont, and encouraged more aggressive marketing and distribution policies. But these policies stretched the Co-op’s resources, and the AFC decided that only one government-funded distribution body was to be supported and that was the AFI; the Co-op had to close its doors. After a brief and badly thought out relationship with a commercial proprietor (Encore) selected by the AFC, FilmNews was allowed to become its own entity. Given a home for several years by Metro TV (now Metro Screen) in the Paddington Town Hall complex, and then by UTS, proved fruitful in both cases. New writers, new topics, new ways of looking at issues came out of both relationships, and Filmnews continued and improved its coverage of a growing, developing community that encompassed film and television production, film and media policies, and the institutions and organisations that covered and represented all sorts of different aspects of an increasingly diverse and complex area.

Demise

Filmnews was always funded by the AFC. Small and spasmodic amounts of funding came from the various state bodies, a regular and reasonable advertising revenue was earned, a respectable number of subscriptions sold, both locally and overseas, but the AFC was the major support. They continually tried to have a cover price applied, despite a regular and well argued responses that proved (to our eyes at least) that a free distribution was a far more effective way of getting to the audience, and that trying to compete with other publications in newsagents would probably kill Filmnews off. But they kept the funding at a static level for a number of years, and although they did fund me to go on a research mission to the other states to talk about increasing state input and funding (which looked promising), they suddenly pulled the plug on FilmNews in 1994. There was a brief effort to restart FilmNews in 1995, with a new editor (Paul Kalina), but with all the original support systems cancelled, it was just too hard to reinvigorate publication without the time, money, and resources the AFC was unwilling to provide. So the AFC put their film publication money into RealTime and a little more to Metro, while IF and FILMINK magazines got going.

Charlize Theron (; born 7 August 1975) is a South African actress, film producer and former fashion model.

She rose to fame in the late 1990s following her roles in ''2 Days in the Valley'', ''Mighty Joe Young'', ''The Devil's Advocate'' and ''The Cider House Rules''. She received critical acclaim and an Academy Award for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the film ''Monster'', for which she became the first South African to win an Academy Award in a major acting category. She received another Academy Award nomination for her performance in ''North Country''.

Early life

Theron was born in Benoni, in the then Transvaal Province of South Africa, the only child of Gerda Jacoba Aletta (née Maritz; born 27 January 1953) and Charles Jacobus Theron (27 November 1947 – 21 June 1991). Her mother is of German descent and her father was of Occitan and Dutch ancestry; Theron is descended from early Huguenot settlers, and Boer War figure Daniel Theron was her great-great uncle. "Theron" is an Occitan surname (originally spelled Théron) pronounced in Afrikaans as "Tronn", although she has said that the way it is pronounced in South Africa is "Thrown". She changed the pronunciation when she moved to the U.S.

Although fluent in English, her first language is Afrikaans. She grew up on her parents' farm in Benoni, near Johannesburg. Her father died on 21 June 1991, after he was shot by Theron's mother. Theron's father, who suffered from alcoholism, physically attacked her mother and threatened both women while being drunk. The shooting was legally adjudged to have been self-defence and her mother faced no charges.

Theron attended Putfontein Primary School (Laerskool Putfontein). At the age of thirteen, Theron was sent to boarding school and began her studies at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg.

Career

At the age of sixteen, Theron travelled to Milan on a one-year modelling contract, after winning a local competition. She went to New York with Pauline's Model Management. She decided to remain after her contract ended, attending the Joffrey Ballet School, where she trained as a ballet dancer. A knee injury closed this career path when Theron was 19.

Unable to dance, Theron flew to Los Angeles on a one-way ticket her mother bought her. During her early months there, she went to a bank to cash a cheque her mother had sent her to help with the rent. When the teller refused to cash it, Theron immediately started a shouting match with her. Afterwards, a talent agent in line behind her handed her his business card and subsequently introduced her to some casting agents and also an acting school. She later fired him as her manager after he kept sending her scripts for films similar to ''Showgirls'' and ''Species''. After several months in the city, she was cast in her first film part, a non-speaking role in the direct-to-video film ''Children of the Corn III'' (1995). Her fist speaking role was a supporting but significant part in ''2 Days in the Valley''. Larger roles in widely released Hollywood films followed, and her career expanded in the late 1990s with box office successes like ''The Devil's Advocate'' (1997), ''Mighty Joe Young'' (1998), and ''The Cider House Rules'' (1999). She was on the cover of the January 1999 issue of ''Vanity Fair'' as the "White Hot Venus".

After appearing in a few notable films, Theron starred as the serial killer Aileen Wuornos in ''Monster'' (2003). Film critic Roger Ebert called it "one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema". For this role, Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 76th Academy Awards in February 2004, as well as the SAG Award and the Golden Globe Award. She is the first South African to win an Oscar for Best Actress. The Oscar win pushed her to ''The Hollywood Reporter's'' 2006 list of highest-paid actresses in Hollywood; earning $10,000,000 for both her subsequent films, ''North Country'' and ''Æon Flux'', she ranked seventh, behind Halle Berry, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Renée Zellweger, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

On 30 September 2005, Theron received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the same year, she starred in the financially unsuccessful science fiction thriller ''Æon Flux''.

Theron received Best Actress Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her lead performance in the drama ''North Country''. ''Ms.'' magazine also honoured her for this performance with a feature article in its Fall 2005 issue. She also received the 2005 Spike Video Game Award for Best Performance by a Human Female for her voiceover work in the Æon Flux video game.

In 2005 Theron portrayed Rita, Michael Bluth's (Jason Bateman) love interest, on the third season of Fox's critically acclaimed television series ''Arrested Development''. She also received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her role of Britt Ekland in the 2004 HBO movie ''The Life and Death of Peter Sellers''.

In 2008 Theron was named the Hasty Pudding Theatricals Woman of the Year. That year she also starred with Will Smith in ''Hancock'', a film that grossed $227.9M in the U.S. and $396.4M internationally, and in late 2008 she was asked to be a UN Messenger of Peace by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

In October 2009, Theron was cast to star in a sequel to the ''Mad Max'' films, titled ''Mad Max: Road Fury'', which will commence filming at Broken Hill in New South Wales, Australia in late 2010.

On 4 December 2009, Theron co-presented the draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, accompanied by several other celebrities of South African origin. During rehearsals she drew an Ireland ball instead of France as a joke at the expense of FIFA, referring to Thierry Henry's handball controversy in the play off match between France and Ireland. The stunt alarmed FIFA enough for it to fear she might do it again in front of a live global audience.

As reported on Piers Morgan Tonight on 2 July 2011, Theron's movies have earned a combine total of 800 Million dollars.

Theron has been cast in the role of The Wicked Queen in ''Snow White and the Huntsman''.

Personal life

Theron lives in the Los Angeles area. She separated from her partner of almost a decade, Irish actor Stuart Townsend (with whom she starred in the 2004 film ''Head in the Clouds'' as well as in the 2002 film ''Trapped''), in January 2010.

Theron became a naturalised citizen of the United States in May 2007.

She signed with William Morris Endeavour in 2009 and is represented by CEO Ari Emanuel.

Health concerns

While filming ''Æon Flux'' in Berlin, Germany, Theron suffered a herniated disc in her neck, which occurred as a result of her suffering a fall while filming a series of back handsprings. This required her to wear a neck collar for a month.

In July 2009 Theron was diagnosed with a serious stomach virus, thought to be contracted while travelling outside the United States. She was hospitalised at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and she finished convalescing in her own home.

Promotional deals

Having signed a deal with John Galliano in 2004, Theron replaced Estonian model Tiiu Kuik as the spokeswoman in the ''J'ADORE'' advertisements by Christian Dior. Galliano has reputedly cited her as a muse and has been creating couture dresses for her to wear to formal red carpet events such as the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.

From October 2005 to December 2006 Theron earned $3,000,000 for the use of her image in a worldwide print media advertising campaign for Raymond Weil watches. In February 2006, she and her loan-out corporation were sued by Weil for breach of contract. The lawsuit was settled on 4 November 2008.

Activism

Theron is involved in women's rights organisations, and has marched in pro-choice rallies.

Theron also is a supporter of animal rights and active member of PETA. She appeared in a PETA ad for their anti-fur campaign. She is a supporter of same-sex marriage and attended a march to support that in Fresno, California, on 30 May 2009.

In July 2009 it was announced that Theron's Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) would form a coalition with LAFC Soccer Club to give soccer fields to rural areas in South Africa. LAFC Chelsea, one of the United States's most successful and prominent youth soccer clubs, made a three-year commitment to help build a community-wide soccer programme for the schools in the Umkhanyakude District. This help includes uniforms, cleats, balls and equipment, along with professional training for local coaches, referees and administrators. The soccer league training will also include life-saving health education administered through a CTAOP-funded mobile health program. With the 2010 FIFA World Cup on African soil for the very first time, CTAOP wants to put a spotlight on the urgent need to provide sustainable health, education and recreational resources to remote areas where HIV/AIDS rates are unacceptably high.

In December 2009, CTAOP and TOMS Shoes partnered to create a limited edition unisex shoe. The shoe was made from vegan-materials and was inspired by the African Baobab tree, whose silhouette was embroidered on blue and orange canvas. 10,000 pairs were given to destitute children, and a portion of the proceeds went direcly to CTAOP.

Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr. (born May 20, 1983), popularly known as Jr. NTR or Tarak is a Popular Indian film actor who appears in Telugu movies. He is son of actor/politician Nandamuri Harikrishna and Shalini. He is the grandson of Legendary actor turned politician NTR.

Starting his career as a child actor with ''Ramayanam'' (1996) as a child artist, Tarak began his professional career five years later as a lead actor with ''Ninnu Chudalani'' (2001). His work includes ''Student No. 1'', ''Aadi'', ''Simhadri'', ''Yamadonga'', ''Adhurs'', ''Brindaavanam''. Tarak has established himself as one of the most prominent, leading, and successful actors of Telugu cinema.

Early life

Tarak was born out of wedlock to Harikrishna and Shalini. He is the grandson of Telugu cinema legendary actor NTR. He has two half brothers, Kalyan Ram and Janaki Ram and a half sister. He is also nephew of actor Nandamuri Balakrishna. He did his schooling at Vidyaranya in Hyderabad. He was highly influenced by his Legendary Grandfather NTR from his childhood and developed interest in cultural and social activities. He learned Kuchipudi( famous South Indian Classical dance) during his school days and performed shows at various places both in India and abroad winning laurels and awards. His debut movie as a child artiste was in his grandfather's film 'Brahmarshi Viswamithra' in the year 1993.

Career

He began his career as a child artist. His first movie he starred in was ''Brahmarshi Viswamithra'' directed by NTR himself. But his full length major role movie was ''Bala Ramayanam'' directed by Guna Shekar. Tarak made his re-entry into the Tollywood with Ninnu Choodalani in 2001; but it failed to perform well at the box office. However in the same year he went on to gain fame with ''Student No. 1'', directed by S.S. Rajamouli, followed by soft said Love story ''Subbu'' and ''Aadi'', which was a blockbuster, and created immediate stardom for him. In year 2003, he came up with a Political Movie Naaga. Even though the movie raised some political issues worth giving a thought, it settled as an average However his next movie ''Simhadri'' went on to become a Blockbuster. In 2004, his career took a down turn with ''Andhrawala''. Though ''Samba'' fared as above average grosser his next movies Naa Alludu and Narasimhudu released in year 2005 did badly at box office, in 2006, his film ''Ashok (film)'' had the biggest opening week gross in his career but did not appease his fans.

His next movie ''Rakhi'' directed by Pasupuleti Krishna Vamsi which proved a success at the box office, has gained him admirable reviews from fans and critics alike. His next movie, Yamadonga, which was inspired by his grandfather’s blockbuster Yamagola, released in August 2007 brought him back into the super-hit stream, and became the sensational movie of the year. Jr. NTR's next film was ''Kantri'', released in May 2008 exposed his superb skill of dancing. In year 2010 he appeared in two movies, and both of them ''Adhurs'' in which he played a dual role and Brindavanam succeeded well at box-office. ''Shakthi'' released on 1 April 2011 and it failed to perform well at the box office.

Jr. NTR is currently shooting for directer Surender Reddy. Another movie under the direction of Boyapati Seenu was launched on February 18, 2011.

Politics

Jr. NTR was one of the campaigners for the Telugu Desam Party, for the Indian general election, 2009 from April to May 2009.

Personal life

Tarak became was engaged to his distant relative Lakshmi Pranathi on 1 April 2010. The couple married on May 5, 2011 at a private ceremony at shilpa kala vedika, Hyderabad.

Tusshar Kapoor (तुषार कपूर; born 20 November 1976 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) is an Indian actor. He is the son of Bollywood actor Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor and brother of Ekta Kapoor. He studied at the University of Michigan and graduated with a BBA from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Tushar made his debut with ''Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai'' alongside Kareena Kapoor in 2001. The next two years followed with a list of box office flops, although he was noted for acting alongside his father in the teen slasher film ''Kucch To Hai'' (2003). He was recognized for his role as a shy boy who gains the ability to become invisible in ''Gayab'' (2004). Kapoor appeared in comic roles in ''Golmaal'' (2006) and ''Golmaal Returns'' (2008) and ''Golmaal 3'' (2010).

Ravi Teja (; born Bhupatiraju Ravi Shankar Raju on 26 January 1969) is an Indian Telugu film actor. He won the Nandi Award for Best Actor for the film Neninthe in 2008.

Basics on Ravi Teja Ravi Tejaâs real name is Bhupatiraju Ravishankar Raju. He was born on 26th January 1968 in Jaggampeta, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. His father is Rajgopal Raju, a pharmacist and Rajyalaxmi, a home maker.

He was a naughty child who used to set fire to couches to enact action scenes. He tried to run away from home to become an actor in Bollywood when he eleven years old.
